N20bn Damages To Igboho: FG To Appeal Court Decision

Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami

The federal government of Nigeria has declared that it won’t immediately pay the ₦20billion awarded against it by the court over the invasion of Sunday Igboho’s residence by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Disclosing this earlier today, September 17, in an interview granted to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, said rather, the FG was going to appeal the decision of the high court in Ibadan, Oyo State which handed down the ruling.

TheFact Nigeria had reported today the ruling of the court directing the federal government to pay Sunday Igboho the sum of N20bn for unlawfully invading his Soka, Ibadan house on July 1, while tongue-lashing the DSS for acting based on what the ruling judge described as “arbitrary aggression and prejudices” arising from his agitation for the Yoruba nation.

Meanwhile, the DSS, reacting to the judgment of the Oyo State High Court, disclosed that it has not been served the judgment directing it to pay Igboho over damages of his residence during an invasion of his property, to the tune of N20bn.

Furthermore, the umbrella body of the Yoruba self-determination Group, Ilana Omo Oodua, has called on the Secret Police to heed the ruling of the Court and pay the N20bn damages to Igboho.

Spokesperson of the Yoruba Group, Maxwell Adeleye, reacting to the ruling in a statement described it as “a victory of light over illegalities”.
