National Assembly Approves Conference Committee Report On Electoral Bill

The National Assembly has approved the conference committee report on the electoral act (amendment) bill.

The report was approved after a motion was moved on Tuesday by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi in Abuja.

TheFact Nigeria recalled that the senate and House of Representatives in July, had passed different version of the bill which led to the setting up of a conference committee.

In the conference committee report, both chambers of the National Assembly empowered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the best mode to transmit election results.

The electoral commission will now have to decide how to transmit election results — either electronically or manually.

Both chambers also approved that all political parties must use the direct primary mode in picking candidates.

The House of Representatives has also received the report of the Conference committee on Electoral Act Amendment.

The report was laid by Akeem Adeyemi (APC, Oyo) during plenary .

While Presenting the report, Adeyemi was the co-chairman of the House-Senate joint conference committee, said the 7 man committee set up by the House had met with its senate counterpart on the Electoral Act amendment act and arrived at the report presented.

Adeyemi said the assignment given to the committee was to harmonise areas of difference with the version of the passed electoral act amendment.

However, the speaker observed that, there was a recommittal of the passed bill by the Senate, he therefore said, based on procedure, there was no need for the presentation.

He noted that, the report may be presented for the record adding that, what remains for the House at present was to sign off on the bill to be sent to the president for assent.
