Sokoto Governor Confirms 43 Dead In Illela Attacks

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has confirmed that 43 persons lost thier lives in an attack on Illela LGA of the State.

Tambuwal’s Special Adviser on Media, Muhammed Bello, in a statement issued on Thursday, disclosed that the governor led members of the State’s executive and the security council, as well as other top government officials on a condolence visit to the people of Illela on Wednesday.

TheFact Nigeria reports that marauders attacked the town and some nearby villages in the wee hours of November 15, initially killing 13 people, and by the time of the governor’s visit on Wednesday, the death toll had risen to 43. Furthermore, the village chief of Kalmalo, one of the five villages affected by the midnight attack, was injured. Other affected villages include: Munwadata, Sarma, Runji and Masasa.

Governor Tambuwal, while assuring the people of Illela, that the government and people of Sokoto State felt their grief and offered their condolences, commended the authority of the local government, traditional leaders and community leaders for their legal composition of a group of volunteers to work with security guards in the area.

He further assured that the State government would form joint operations of volunteers who would work under the supervision of security agencies to strengthen security in the region, and called on the population not to be intimidated by the attacks.

“Instead, it should motivate you to redouble your efforts without seeking revenge, by securing your communities”, said Tambuwal.
