Five Feared Dead In Trader – Okada Rider Clash In Abuja

At least five persons have reportedly lost their lives in a fracas between traders and commercial motorcycle operators, popularity called Okada, in Dei Dei, a community under Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Abuja.

A resident in the area said the clash was as a result of the breakdown of law and order following an accident involving a motorcycle rider.

TheFact Nigeria gathers that a commercial motorcyclist knocked down a yet-to-be-identified woman who died on the spot. Building materials traders promptly nabbed the motorcyclist who called on his colleagues to come to his rescue.

The Okada riders reportedly moved to rescue their colleague from the attackers, and the situation degenerated afterwards.

According to the resident who spoke on the grounds of anonymity, “five persons that I know have been killed in this incident. We have been calling for security intervention to no avail”.

“We are really worried that this crisis is tilting towards ethnic dimension,” he said.

Although the casualty figure could not be verified, one of the affected persons confirmed that his house was torched.

Security operatives are said to have been mobilized to the scene to quell the fighting.

It is noted that the incident happened just as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reimposed a ban on Okada riders in some areas of Lagos over the killing of a sound engineer on Thursday, 12 May, 2022.

The victim, David Sunday, and father of two, was lynched and burnt to death after a misunderstanding ensued over a N100 balance with one of the commercial motorcyclists. Four persons have since been arrested in connection with the incident.
