Afenifere Renounces Atiku, Supports G5 Governors

Former Vice President and PDP flag bearer, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba social and political group, said it would not support Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate.

While speaking on Tuesday, the group said Atiku’s candidacy violated the PDP’s power-sharing arrangement.

TheFact daily reports that the group also supported the five governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opposed to the presidential ambition of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The group blamed the crisis rocking the PDP on the violation of the party’s constitution and the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference to rotate power between the northern and southern regions of the country.

Mainstream Yoruba Secretary-General, Chief Sola Ebiseeni said that the position of five PDP governors opposed to the presidency of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar led by Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike was supported by Afenifere who believed that power should come To the south after President Muhammadu Buhari completed an eight-year term.

Ebiseeni, who justified Afenifere’s presence at the South West rally of Labor Party candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, said the PDP’s constitution had been violated by Abubakar’s choice as the PDP’s presidential candidate.

According to him, it was difficult for members of the Afenifere, with a clear conscience and the peace of the nation, to support the unwise choice of the PDP presidential candidate because of his region of origin.
