EFCC Charges Banks to Monitor Mobile Money Operators

Head of the Gombe Zonal Office, EFCC, Babashani Umar Sanda, with the Controller of CBN in Gombe state, Alhaji Shehu Goringor

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has charged banks operating across the country to put in place water-tight mechanisms to regulate and monitor activities of Mobile Money/Point of Sale (POS) Operators.

Babashani Umar Sanda, Head of the Gombe Zonal Office, gave the charge today, 10 June, while playing host to the Controller of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in Gombe state, Alhaji Shehu Goringor and his team in Gombe.

“I am quite pleased to have you here, having noted the existing cordial relationship between EFCC and the CBN especially in the area of exchange of information and the need to further strengthen it for our mutual benefit and that of our country.

“This visit is timely as it gives me the opportunity to report to you an emerging trend involving Mobile Money Operators, which we commonly call POS, in abetting crimes especially cybercrimes where they are used to scam gullible Nigerians in connivance with internet fraudsters known as Yahoo Yahoo boys,” Sanda said.

Earlier, Goringor informed that they were at EFCC to solidify the already existing relationship between the two organisations and to equally solicit the Commission’s assistance in the areas of training and sensitisation.

Similarly, the Zonal Head received in audience the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Kaltungo, Gombe State, Dr. Suleiman Lami, who said he was visiting “to appreciate the good work you are doing in stemming the tide of corruption and also solicit your support in enlightening our students and the entire Polytechnic community on the dangers of cybercrimes, bank fraud and other crimes they could fall victim to or lured into.”

Sanda assured the varsity Rector of the Commission’s preparedness to sensitise the students, noting that it was one of the statutory responsibilities of the EFCC to enlighten the public on the ills of corruption.
