Gunmen Attack Hospital In Niger, Kill Two, Abduct Doctor, Others

Two persons have reportedly lost their lives following an attack by gunmen at the Abdulsalam Abubakar General Hospital, Gulu, in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to reports, no less than ten persons, including a medical doctor and pharmacist were abducted during the incident which is said to have occured at about 2am of Tuesday.

TheFact Daily learns that one of those killed was said to be a retired medical personnel known as Ya-Tachi, who lived directly opposite the hospital in the area.

The bandits were said to have stormed the hospital in large numbers, and started shooting sporadically during their operation without any intervention from security personnel and the local vigilantes from the area.

“They arrived in large numbers and were shooting sporadically, which sent fears into the people during the period of their operation”, a resident in the area, Zakari Nda, narrated.

“At the end of the operation, many people were abducted and some wounded,” he stated.

He also called on the Niger State government and the security personnel to rise up and do the needful in order to end the incessant attacks on communities.

This is the fourth time kidnappers have attacked different communities within the area in recent times.

Villagers in the community have, as a result of the attack, the fourth in recent times, been subjected to a state of heightened tension, particularly given the lack of presence of both security agencies and local vigilantes during this latest assault.

Efforts to get the reaction of the State Police command have proved abortive as the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.
