Gunmen Attack Police Station, Kill Sergeant, In Bayelsa

A police sergeant has been reportedly killed by gunmen during an attack on the Divisional Police Station at Kolo, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

According to the spokesman of the State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, during the attack which took place on Tuesday, 12 October, the gunmen also ransacked the station for arms and made away with the service rifle of the deceased officer and another from the armoury.

TheFact Nigeria gathered that the gunmen, numbering six, reportedly opened fire on the police team while they were conducting stop-and-search of vehicles in front of the station.

Furthermore, an eyewitness account stated that three policemen were on duty at the time of the incident, while the remaining two tried to return firepower, but were outnumbered and had to scamper for safety.

The deceased policeman was said to have been rushed to the hospital where he received medical attention but later died.

A former Youth President of Kolo 3 Community, Thankgod Odo, who confirmed the incident, said the quiet community was woken up by sound of sporadic gunshots at 12am on Tuesday and discovered that the divisional police headquarters was under attack.

Meanwhile, police assault squads, made up of the Operation Puff Adder and the anti cultism have been deployed roth area.

Butswat also said that the police has launched a tactical investigation into the incident.
