‘Major Shake-up In the Armed Forces Imminent’

Following the appointment of new Service Chiefs on Tuesday, to checkmate insurgency and insecurity in the country, speculations are rife that a major reorganisation is imminent in the Armed Forces.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, accepted the resignations of the helmsmen of Defence, Army, Navy and Air Force and replaced them with Maj-Gen. Lucky Irabor, Maj-Gen. Attahiru Ibrahim; Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao to oversee affairs in the respective forces.

TheFact Nigeria gathered that, following the latest appointments, the new Service Chiefs will carry out major reorganisations, which will cut across both tactical and operational levels of the three services.

A senior military officer, said in confidence that what happened on Tuesday, will lead to the retirement of many officers within the ranks of Major General and Brigadier General, adding that those likely to be affected are officers within the rank of Major General, who are senior to the newly-appointed military heads. This, he explained, was because an officer is not expected to serve under his junior as Chief.

The source further explained that new appointments and postings to tactical and operational commands will take place to fill the vacuum created by the retirement of affected officers.

Meanwhile, findings at the Services’ headquarters in Abuja indicated that some of the ex-Service Chiefs were still coming to office, and according to an officer speaking under anonymity, this was not out of place as they needed to prepare their hand-over notes.
