2021 Results: NECO Records Decrease In Examination Malpractices

The National Examinations Council(NECO) has disclosed it recorded a 0.98% decrease in examination malpractices incidences; 20,003 candidates caught this year against 33,470 cases recorded in 2020.

NECO Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, made the announcement on Friday, October 29, 2021 at a press briefing on the release of this year’s Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) internal results in Minna, Niger State.

TheFact Nigeria observed that there was an increase in number of candidates who sat for the examinations this year; 1,226,796 candidates this year, against 1,209,992 in 2020.

Prof. Wushishi noted that the drop in malpractice incidence in 2021 was attributed to the deployment of biometric verification devices and strengthening of the examination monitoring strategy in terms of scope and depth.

He disclosed that five schools, one each in Bauchi, Kaduna and Bayelsa and two in Katsina state were recommended for derecognition for two years due to their involvement in mass cheating/whole school cases.

He added that twenty supervisors were blacklisted for various offences ranging from poor supervision, aiding and abetting, connivance with non candidates to write answers on chalkboards, compromise and extortion.

The NECO Registrar maintained that the Council had a long-standing tradition for zero tolerance for malpractice which it intends to maintain.

He apologized for the delay in the release of results and assured that the Council would do everything in it’s power to forestall such occurrencies in the future.

He posited that this year’s Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal had been adjudged by many stakeholders to be very successful. This, he said was “no doubt, a big achievement”.
