Senate President Breaks Silence, Says Nigeria Needs Twitter

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has called on the federal government to resolve issues with the management of Twitter saying, Nigeria needs the social media platform just as it needs Nigeria.

The Senate president stated this on Friday at a new briefing in Abuja to mark the second anniversary of the 9th Senate.

TheFact Nigeria reports that this reaction is coming one week after the federal government had banned Twitter from operating in the country for deleting president Muhammadu Buhari’s Tweet.

Unlike the lower legislative chamber, the Senate kept mum on the ban when the national assembly resumed sitting on Tuesday.

At the lower legislative chamber, the information minister Lai Mohammed was summoned over the ban, but its members disagreed over a prayer asking the government to reverse the ban immediately.

However at the briefing the senate said it was convinced that the Federal Government and Twitter would eventually resolve their difference.

He said, “The Honorable Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has informed Nigerians that the government is talking with Twitter to resolve this matter.

“Our belief is that Nigeria needs Twitter just as much as Twitter needs Nigeria.

“We believe that the matter between Twitter and the Federal Government of Nigeria will be resolved.

“But beyond that, I’m an optimist, I believe all of us will have learnt our lessons,” he said.

Speaking on insecurity facing the nation, the Senate president said he was sure Nigeria would overcome her numerous challenges.

Lawan said he believed this was the worst level of insecurity the nation could get to, noting that the nation could not go beyond this level and that it would only be better.
