Former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi has assured his supporters that their votes would count in the forthcoming general elections in 2027.
Mr Obi, who gave the assurance in a post on his X handle on Monday, said all those who are there not to count the votes would be counted among those destroying Nigeria.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the Notice of Election and the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Elections on Friday in Abuja.
The Notice was in strict compliance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates publication not later than 360 days before the election date.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, who made the announcement said the Presidential & National Assembly Elections would be held on February 20, 2027. While Governorship & State Houses of Assembly Elections would be held on March 6, 2027.
According to him, the elections would cover the offices of: President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Governors and Deputy Governors (except in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo and Osun States).
Others are for Members of the Senate, Members of the House of Representatives, and Members of the State Houses of Assembly.
Meanwhile, Obi encouraged everyone to remain at the polling units after voting to count and witness the counting and transmission of results.
Obi’s advice follows Wednesday’s rejection of real-time transmission of election results from the polling units by the National Assembly, while passing the 2022 Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.
He said: “Those who refuse to allow the votes count will be made to count the full weight of the law against rigging. Let me reiterate: if you do not count our votes, we will count you among those who destroy our democracy, thereby destroying our future, and you must answer to the law.”
