The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a heat stress warning for several parts of the country as temperatures continue to rise across the nation
In an advisory released on Tuesday, the agency said the prevailing weather conditions could increase the risk of heat stress, particularly in states such as Benue State, Nasarawa State, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Others include Kogi State, Niger State, Kebbi State, Cross River State, Oyo State and Ogun State, as well as other inland areas of the southern states.
NiMet explained that heat stress occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate its temperature due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, often worsened by high humidity, dehydration and poor ventilation.
The agency urged members of the public to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
It advised residents to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, remain in well-ventilated or air-conditioned spaces where possible, and wear light, breathable clothing when outdoors.
NiMet also recommended the use of hats, sunshades and sunscreen to reduce direct exposure to sunlight.
Parents and caregivers were specifically advised to ensure infants and young children remain cool and properly hydrated, warning that children should never be left unattended in parked vehicles due to the risk of rapid heat build-up.
The agency further cautioned against engaging in strenuous physical activities during the hottest hours of the day, particularly between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
NiMet noted that heat stress can result from a combination of factors including high temperatures, humidity, dehydration, heavy clothing and intense physical exertion.
The agency urged the public to stay updated with its weather forecasts and advisories to ensure adequate safety during the current hot weather conditions.
