FG Secures Conviction Of 386 Terrorists In Mass Trials

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Federal Government has announced that it has secured conviction of 386 out of 508 terrorism-related cases prosecuted at the Federal High Court, following the conclusion of the ninth phase of ongoing mass trials.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, made the disclosure while briefing journalists at the end of the latest trial phase.

He said the outcomes reflect sustained national efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen justice delivery in Nigeria.

TheFact Daily reports that Nigeria’s terrorism-related prosecutions have, in recent years, been handled through special mass trial sessions introduced to address a large backlog of cases linked largely to insurgency and terrorism-related arrests.

The initiative was designed to speed up justice delivery, decongest detention facilities, and ensure that suspects are either convicted or discharged based on evidence.

Fagbemi added that 8 defendants were discharged, 2 were acquitted while 112 cases were adjourned to the next phase of proceedings scheduled to hold between the 15th and 18th of June 2026.

According to him, the fact that there were discharges, and acquittals is a testament that due process was followed: anybody who is not guilty will not be sent to jail.

The AGF averred that the type of punishments meted out by the judges sends a clear signal to those involved in terrorism and terrorism financing that they will not be accommodated in Nigeria.

“There is no space for them (terrorists) here in Nigeria,” Fagbemi declared, underscoring the government’s resolve to eliminate extremist threats through both security operations and judicial processes.

The government maintains that the ongoing trials remain a key pillar in its wider strategy to defeat terrorism and restore lasting security across the country.
