The Senate has passed the Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill, 2026, following a fresh review to address legal and technical concerns identified after its initial approval.
The legislation was passed during plenary in Abuja on Tuesday, after lawmakers revisited and amended the earlier version already transmitted to the President.
The motion for its passage was moved by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, and seconded by Minority Leader, Abba Moro.
Earlier, the Senate rescinded its previous decision on the bill, citing the need to correct fundamental issues flagged during a post passage review by the Ministry of Justice.
At the Committee of the Whole, Bamidele explained that a joint technical committee made up of lawmakers from both chambers of the National Assembly and legal drafting experts from the Directorate of Legal Services was set up to resolve the concerns.
He said the panel carefully examined the bill and proposed necessary amendments to ensure legal clarity and alignment with existing frameworks.
Following the rescission, the bill was recommitted for clause-by-clause consideration, where lawmakers adopted corrections after extensive deliberation.
The Senate subsequently passed the revised version of the bill, paving the way for its transmission to the President for assent.
