The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reassured passengers that the recent disruptions on the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service are temporary and not as a result of neglect.
The assurance was contained in a statement issued by the Corporation’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu on Tuesday.
Unyimadu said the Abuja–Kaduna corridor remains a flagship route in Nigeria’s modern rail system and acknowledged the discomfort experienced by commuters who have endured reduced trips since the August 26 derailment, which damaged the Corporation’s flagship Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) coaches.
He said the reduction in service frequency should not be mistaken for negligence, explaining that the disruptions are the outcome of two major setbacks the March 2022 terrorist attack on the line and the recent derailment.
According to the statement, the 2022 attack not only caused loss of lives but also compelled the Corporation to overhaul its safety and operating procedures, including restricting late-night trips and deepening security collaboration with the Armed Forces and Police.
The more recent derailment further reduced the number of available coaches, forcing adjustments in daily operations. “Repairs and refurbishment are ongoing with urgency,” the NRC said, adding that plans are in place for the deployment of additional coaches to restore full service.
Unyimadu stressed that the federal government has continued to support investments in rail infrastructure, while the Minister of Transportation remains in close contact with the Corporation to ensure speedy restoration of normal operations.
The NRC said several interventions are currently underway, including repairs of damaged coaches, consideration of alternative rolling stock to temporarily reinforce the route, and continuous strengthening of security along the corridor. Restoration of multiple daily trips remains a priority target.
Appealing for public patience, the Corporation assured passengers of progressive improvements in the coming weeks.
“The Abuja–Kaduna Train Service remains our pride. We value every voice, including that of Mr. Iskeel and all passengers who rely on our services daily,” the statement said.
The NRC reiterated its commitment to safety, reliability and transparent communication. It also disclosed that passengers can reach the Managing Director via SMS on 08075005411.
