Nigeria edged out Egypt 4-2 on penalties after a tense 0-0 draw in the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff at Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, to secure a record ninth bronze medal.
The Super Eagles, devastated by their semifinal penalty shootout loss to hosts Morocco, showed resilience against the Pharaohs of Egypt who qualified for the third place after a narrow 0-1 loss to Senegal.
Both teams played very well in both first and second half, producing few clear chances as fatigue weighed them down heavily in the 90th minute.
Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi starred for Nigeria in the shootout, converting their penalty kicks confidently.
This victory makes Nigeria the most crowned AFCON bronze winner, far ahead of Egypt and other African nations.
