Archbishop Martins Decries Killings, Urges Trust In God At Easter

By Stella Enenche, Abuja

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and steadfast in their faith in God despite the nation’s mounting security and economic challenges.

In his 2026 Easter message, on Saturday , the Archbishop extended greetings to Christians on the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, describing the season as a powerful reminder of divine love, sacrifice, and victory over suffering.

He noted that the Easter celebration is taking place amid widespread hardship, as many Nigerians continue to grapple with rising living costs and persistent insecurity across the country.

According to him, the significance of Easter lies in its message of hope, even in the face of adversity. He said the resurrection of Christ reassures believers that no situation is beyond God’s power, urging citizens not to allow present difficulties to weaken their faith.

Martins, however, expressed deep concern over the continued loss of lives due to insecurity, particularly referencing the recent attack in Jos, Plateau State, which occurred during Palm Sunday and claimed the lives of more than 27 people.

Describing the incident as both tragic and disturbing, he condemned the attackers for carrying out violence on a day considered sacred by Christians, while also criticising government efforts to curb insecurity.

The Archbishop said the repeated attacks on innocent citizens point to a failure on the part of authorities to adequately safeguard lives and property, despite significant resources allocated to security.

He called on all levels of government to prioritise the protection of citizens over political interests, stressing that the continued bloodshed and hardship faced by Nigerians demand urgent and decisive action.

Martins also raised concerns over worsening economic conditions, including rising fuel prices, which he said have compounded the suffering of ordinary Nigerians and reflect misplaced national priorities.

He urged leaders to embrace selfless and sacrificial service, in line with the example of Jesus Christ, by taking concrete steps to end insecurity and improve citizens’ welfare.

He added that public office holders who are unable to meet these expectations should consider resigning.

Looking ahead to upcoming elections, the Archbishop encouraged Nigerians to be actively involved in choosing credible leaders who possess integrity, sincerity, and a genuine commitment to national development.

He further appealed to citizens to promote unity and peaceful coexistence, warning against attempts to exploit the country’s diversity for division.

Martins concluded by praying for the souls of those who have lost their lives to violence in various parts of the country and for comfort for their families, while wishing Nigerians a peaceful and fulfilling Easter celebration.
