Army Aviation Expansion Strategic To Winning Modern Security Threats — Shaibu
By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Waidi Shaibu, has described the expansion of the Nigerian Army Aviation wing as a strategic force multiplier critical to confronting Nigeria’s evolving security threats.
Speaking on Thursday, February 26, 2026, during a visit by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, to Army Headquarters in Abuja, the COAS said sustained policy backing and predictable funding are essential to maximizing the operational impact of air power.
Shaibu stressed that maintaining operational superiority in today’s complex threat environment requires seamless integration of advanced aviation platforms and unmanned aerial systems with efficient administrative support structures.
He noted that the ongoing expansion of Army Aviation capabilities, alongside enhancements in unmanned aerial systems, has significantly improved response times, precision targeting and situational awareness across multiple theatres of operation.
According to him, these capabilities are reshaping battlefield dynamics, strengthening the Army’s ability to project force, dominate operational spaces and safeguard civilian populations.
The Army Chief added that the long-term success of the modernization drive hinges on sustainable funding, transparent procurement processes and robust logistical support.
Predictable resource flows, he said, would guarantee operational continuity and ensure the aviation component fully delivers on its strategic mandate in support of ground troops.
Shaibu also highlighted rising infrastructural and logistical demands following the recent increase in personnel strength approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
With thousands of recruits currently undergoing training, he called for deliberate investment in barracks construction and facility upgrades to enhance accommodation, welfare and overall living standards, noting that morale and cohesion remain central to operational effectiveness.
In his remarks, Richard Pheelangwa described the engagement as a strategic step toward deepening collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Army.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving administrative synergy, removing procedural bottlenecks and strengthening resource governance in support of the Army’s aviation expansion and broader modernization agenda.
