Blackout Looms As NUEE Threatens To Embark On Industrial Action

By Sunday Etuka, Abuja

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has asked its members to withdraw their services over poor staff welfare and operational issues in the company.

In a letter addressed to the TCN Management dated 24th September, 2025, and signed by the Union’s Ag. General Secretary, Igu Dominic Igwebike, NUEE disclosed that the industrial action takes immediate effect.

NUEE explained in the letter that the action, was following the expiration of the Union’s ultimatum to TCN Management over Non-implementation of National Minimum Wage, Casualization of Workers, Non-provision of working tools and materials, Non-payment of staff salaries since April 2025, Lack of Operational Vehicles, Non-provision of Personal Protective Equipment since 2021, Issues arising from the unbundling of TCN, and Non-payment of retirement benefits.

NUEE accused the TCN Management of handling the issues with kid gloves and lack of regards for the hard-working staff of the company.

“This, they have displayed without any defined road map(s) to addressing them.

“We cannot continue to fold our arms while we watch our rights being vehemently violated and Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) going down the drain. To this end, the Union is compelled to withdraw its services.

“Members are hereby directed to withdraw services to such time that the Management is ready to discharge its obligations towards the workforce.”This directive takes immediate effect and total compliance,” the letter read.

Although no official response has been made by the TCN on the issues at Press Time, as the company’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah could not respond to all the calls put across to her.

However, the issues, if not promptly addressed will throw the nation into total darkness, with consequential implications on businesses and the economy.
