The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on political leaders to demonstrate empathy and take urgent steps to ease the burden on citizens as economic pressures continue to mount across the country.
This was contained in a Palm Sunday message signed by the CAN President, Archbishop, Daniel Okoh.
The association said the current realities facing Nigerians demand compassionate and people-focused leadership.
Reflecting on the significance of Palm Sunday, CAN noted that the biblical account of Jesus Christ entering Jerusalem symbolises humility, peace and purposeful leadership, especially in times of uncertainty.
It said the example remains relevant amid Nigeria’s current socio-economic challenges.
The association expressed concern over the rising cost of living, noting that many families are struggling to cope with increasing prices of fuel, transportation and food.
It linked the situation partly to global tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States, which it said have continued to disrupt global energy markets with local consequences.
“For many Nigerians, the concern is immediate how to cope, plan and stay afloat,” the statement said, adding that in such moments, leadership must inspire confidence and provide reassurance.
CAN emphasised that true leadership is reflected in restraint, empathy and decisions that prioritise the welfare of citizens.
It urged those in authority to adopt policies that will ease hardship, reduce anxiety and foster unity.
The body also called on Christians and people of faith to embrace the spirit of peace and solidarity associated with Palm Sunday, encouraging Nigerians to support one another and remain hopeful despite prevailing difficulties.
Addressing young people and others hardest hit by the economic strain, CAN urged them not to lose hope, stressing that current challenges are temporary.
“As we journey through this sacred season, may the spirit of Palm Sunday guide us towards quiet courage, shared purpose and a renewed commitment to the good of all,” the statement added.
