It is with great sadness that I write this tribute to our beloved friend and classmate, Engr Williams Okpe, who departed this world three days ago. I met Williams in 1977, when we were new intakes at Saint John’s Secondary School, Amoke. Our friendship blossomed over the years, nurtured by our shared experiences, mutual respect, and admiration for each other’s intellect.
Williams was an outstanding student, and his academic prowess was evident even in our early days at Saint John’s. He was one of the brightest minds in our class, and his dedication to his studies earned him top honors in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations. His academic excellence continued at the university, where he graduated with flying colours.
After completing his studies, Williams joined the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), where he made a significant impact in ensuring that substandard products were kept off the market. His commitment to excellence and hard work was a hallmark of his career, and he was widely respected by his colleagues and peers.
Beyond his professional achievements, Williams was a kind and generous soul who touched the lives of many. He was a proud son of Idoma, and his love for his community was evident in his philanthropic efforts. I recall a memorable incident at the burial of the wife of one of our seniors from Saint John’s, where Williams showed up with a gift of exquisite palm wine, which we all enjoyed immensely.
Williams’ passing leaves a void in our lives, but his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered for his intelligence, his generosity, and his unwavering commitment to excellence. As we mourn his loss, we take comfort in the knowledge that he is now in a better place, surrounded by the love of God.
To the Okpe family, the Saint John’s Old Boys’ Girls’ Association, and the entire Idoma community, I offer my deepest condolences. May God grant you the strength to bear this loss, and may Williams’ memory be a blessing to us all.
As we bid farewell to our beloved friend and classmate, we do so with the confidence that he will rise again, and we will be reunited with him in the fullness of time. Rest in peace, William. You will be dearly missed.
