The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has averred that cybersecurity is the bedrock of operational readiness and the key to the mission success of the Nigeria Air Force (NAF).
The CAS disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday while flagging off a three-day cybersecurity awareness training programme for the personnel of the service.
Air Marshal Abubakar said that the programme was a vital initiative that highlights the future of national security in an increasingly interconnected world, where artificial intelligence and advanced technologies play pivotal roles.
He said further that the integration of technology into warfare has ushered in a new era where digital bits and bytes are as formidable as physical bullets and bombs, adding that the integrity of the nation’s defence systems, the security of its communications, and the sanctity of data depended on the strength and resilience of its cybersecurity framework.
“For the Nigerian Air Force, which has distinguished itself as being more technologically advanced than other services, cybersecurity is not just an IT concern—it is the bedrock of our operational readiness and the key to mission success.
This programme therefore marks another milestone under my command philosophy to transform the Nigerian Air Force into a cyber-aware, cyber-agile and cyber-resilient force that effectively meets the airpower demands of national security in all operational environments.
“Our nation has recognized the importance of cybersecurity through the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy, which provides a framework aligned with global best practices for securing Nigeria’s digital environment.
“The National Cybersecurity Policy mandates the establishment of sectoral Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) and Cyber Security Operations Centers (SOCs) to ensure rapid and effective responses to cyber incidents across key sectors.
“In line with this policy, the NAF restructured the Communication and Information Systems (CIS) Branch to include a Cybersecurity Operations Cell (COC) within the Directorate of Information Technology (DIT). The Nigerian Air Force is fully committed to this national vision, and this workshop serves as a vital part of our efforts to ensure that our personnel are equipped to meet the demands of securing our collective cyber environment”, he stated
On the cyber threat landscape for the NAF, he stated that the recent global events have highlighted the severe consequences of cyber attacks, which can disrupt critical operations and undermine national security.
This, he said, is particularly concerning for the Nigerian Air Force, as we increasingly rely on cutting-edge technology to enhance our capabilities.
For instance, he said, NAF’s unmanned aerial vehicles depend on secure digital communications, making them vulnerable to potential hijacking or operational disruptions.
“Similarly, our bespoke Nigerian Air Force Integrated Management System (NAFIMS) and the Digital Correspondence (DIGCO) application, commonly referred to as the ‘Paperless System,’ face risks of data breaches, communication disruptions, and the compromise of sensitive information”.
These vulnerabilities, he said, emphasize the urgent need for a proactive and robust approach to cybersecurity within our ranks, which is precisely the focus of the training program.
Speaking on the “Objectives and Outcomes of the Workshop”, he said that the workshop was designed to enhance NAF cyber defence capabilities by equipping participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills.
Consequently, the Air Force Chief urged participants to embrace cybersecurity as a personal responsibility and to make it an integral part of their daily operations.
“Cybersecurity is a continuous journey that demands vigilance, ethical conduct, and a commitment to protecting our nation’s digital infrastructure. Take the knowledge you gain here and apply it with purpose. This awareness workshop is just the beginning, you must strive to improve and keep yourself abreast with evolving trends in cybersecurity,” he said.
He appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support to the Nigerian Air Force to transform into a more agile and resilient force.
