After several months of denial, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has fiasnlly confirmed that investigations into alleged misconduct by some military officers uncovered a plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.
This is according to an update received on Monday from the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, who disclosed that a comprehensive investigation had since been concluded in line with established military procedures.
TheFact Daily recalls that In October 2025, following reports by Sahara Reporters on October 18, which alleged that the officers—ranging in rank from Captain to Brigadier General—were apprehended by the Defence Intelligence Agency for holding clandestine meetings aimed at toppling the government, the DHQ had announced the arrest of 16 officers over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.
The report also linked the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade to the alleged plot.
Reacting at the time, however, the then Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, dismissed the publication as an attempt to incite tension and mistrust among Nigerians, stressing that the matter was purely an internal disciplinary issue.
He said an investigative panel had been constituted and assured that its findings would be made public.
According to Uba, the findings indicated that some of the officers have cases to answer over allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, adding that the investigation report has now been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority for further action, stressing that the process would ensure accountability while upholding fairness and due process.
“The AFN reiterates that measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.
“The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority”, Uba stated.
