Authorities in the Dominican Republic have made history with the country’s largest-ever cocaine seizure of 9.5 tons, valued at 250 million dollars.
Spokesperson for the Dominican Republic’s Anti-Drug Agency, Carlos Devers, during a press conference, said the drugs were concealed within a banana shipment at the Caucedo port in Santo Domingo, the country’s primary seaport. The shipment is said to have originated from Guatemala and was en route to Belgium.
Devers said ten suspects have been arrested in connection with the haul.
TheFact Daily learns that this latest seizure brings the total amount of drugs confiscated this year to nearly 47 tons. Previously, the second-largest seizure occurred in 2006, when more than 5,680 pounds (2,580 kilograms) of drugs were discovered at the same port.
The Dominican Republic has long been regarded as a significant transit point for drug trafficking.
