Edo Governor Raises Minimum Wage To N70,000

By Alice Etuka, Abuja

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers in the state, raising it from N40,000 to N70,000.

Obaseki announced the development on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the inauguration of the newly constructed ultra-modern Labour House secretariat complex for labour unions in the state.

The move follows the continual advocacy by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for an increased minimum wage in response to the economic challenges brought about by the reforms under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The removal of petrol subsidies and the streamlining of forex windows in 2023 led to immediate food inflation and a surge in the prices of various goods and services.

The national minimum wage has remained at N30,000 since April 18, 2019, a sum widely criticized as “grossly inadequate” given the prevailing economic difficulties.
