EFCC Urged To Explore Non-custodial Sentencing

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Comptroller of Corrections, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Olatubosun Ajibogun, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to explore the options of non-custodial sentencing.

Ajibogun made the call on Thursday, 27th March 2025, during a courtesy visit to the anti-graft agency’s Abuja Acting Zonal Director, Michael Wetkas, as part of efforts aimed at enhancing collaboration between both institutions in the fight against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

Ajibogun, while intimating the Zonal Director about developments in the Correctional Service, stressed that the Service now focuses on skill acquisition, reformation and rehabilitation.

He appreciated the synergy between the two agencies, and advised that in addition to considering community service sentencing, the legal team of the EFCC should seek to ensure that convicts are sent to the appropriate correctional centers, explaining that “the custodial center which some convicts are sent to is not in line with the sentence.”

Wetkas stated that law enforcement responsibility cannot be carried out solely by one agency, and emphasized that “collaboration locally and internationally is the way to go, without which we cannot make any significant progress”.

He appreciated the visit of the Comptroller, and for meeting the commission for collaboration, “and for discussions to move our services and the nation entirely forward”, Wetkas stated.
