Ending Illegal Arms Production: Military Mulls Engaging Local Gun Producers
By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja
The military says it might consider the possibility of engaging manufacturers of local guns in a bid to end the growing production and circulation of illegal arms in Nigeria.
Speaking during his visit to front line troops of Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State, on Monday, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa, said the military would harness the skills of law-abiding citizens in such ‘industry’.
TheFact Daily notes that this disclosure by the CDS follows a review of a cache of locally made arms and ammunition seized by the troops of the Nigerian Military within the areas of operations across regions of the country.
According him, engaging local producers of firearms and military equipment will help clean up the system of such illegality.
He said local gun manufacturing would likely be undertaken in collaboration with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).
General Musa further inspected the military and operational equipment in the forward operation base, while stating that additional resources were on the way to improve welfare and operations of the troops.
