FCT Police Urge NLC To Reschedule Planned Protest Over Security Concerns
By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has acknowledged a planned peaceful protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, scheduled for Tuesday, 3 February 2026, within the Federal Capital Territory.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement on Monday, while reaffirming its respect for the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and its commitment to providing security for lawful activities, disclosed that intelligence reports indicate plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest, posing a threat to public peace and security.
TheFact Daily reports that NLC and TUC have announced a solidarity rally in Abuja amid disputes over unpaid pensions and housing fund deductions following ongoing industrial dispute between the Federal Capital Territory Administration and its staff.
A statement jointly signed by Ag. General Secretary of NLC, Comrade Benson Upah and Secretary General of TUC, Comrade General NA Toro said, “the rally is to publicly affirm that an injury to one is an injury to all, and that the Nigerian labour movement will not abandon its own”.
Adeh stated that the FCT Police Command, in the interest of public safety, therefore appeals to the organizers to consider rescheduling the protest to a later date.
The appeal, according to the Police, is aimed at preventing a breakdown of law and order and ensuring the safety, freedom of movement, and daily activities of residents are not disrupted.
Thus is even as the Command reassured residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and urged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security in the FCT.
