By Sunday Etuka, Abuja

The Federal Government has disclosed plans to set up a technical committee to conduct integrity tests on Alau Dam and other dams across the country.

This resolution was reached at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, presided by President Bola Tinubu.

Alau Dam is situated in the Alau community of Konduga local government area of Borno State and was constructed between 1984 and 1986.

It impounds a major reservoir on the Ngadda River, one of the tributaries of Lake Chad.

On September 9, 2024, the dam overflowed as a result of heavy downpours, causing catastrophic flooding in Borno State and killing over 30 people, with at least 400, 000 people displaced.

FEC also resolved to review the flooding in some parts of the country, especially the one that destroyed almost 50 percent of Maiduguri in Borno State.

It backed the president’s idea of setting up a disaster relief fund to be funded by a portion of the revenue accruing to the Federation account. The Funds will also be solicited from the private sector.
