Fire Mishap: Lagos Govt Shutdown Dosunmu Market

The Lagos State Government has shutdown the popular Dosunmu Market over failure to comply with safety standards.

Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the pronouncement shortly after the inspection of the Market on Thursday.

Recall, the market was razed by fire yesterday following a generator explosion.

Speaking, Sanwo-Olu said, the “Market will remain closed until we can ensure the safety of all structures and compliance with regulations”.

He noted that after a meeting with victims and stakeholders, both immediate and long-term support measures were discussed, declaring that an integrity test on standing structures is now mandatory.

The governor who said, the commitment of his administration to safety and order in the markets is Unwavering, disclosed that unapproved buildings would be demolished, and those found culpable of flouting building and safety standards would be held accountable.

He vowed to end the practice of converting
residential buildings into storage for hazardous materials, which according to him, contributes to rapid spread of the fire.

Sanwo-Olu further disclosed that the Ministry of Physical Planning would intensify its efforts to enforce building codes and prevent misuse of residential properties.

“We cannot overlook the safety of our citizens”, he added

He assured all those affected by the fire that the government is exploring every avenue to assist them and prevent future incidents.

“The tragedy at Dosunmu Market must prompt us to adhere more strictly to safety standards”, he stressed.
