Former MTN Group CEO, Sifiso Dabengwa Is Dead

MTN Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Raymond Sifiso Dabengwa has passed away.

Dabengwa’s death was announced in a statement issued by the family on Monday, September 2, 2024.

He, reportedly died at his Johannesburg home on Sunday morning, 1 September 2024, after a protracted battle with cancer.

His family praised his visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication, which drove significant advancements during his tenure as CEO from 2011 to 2015.

Dabengwa, who served as the MTN group’s president and CEO from 2011 to 2015, was also the former chair of Eskom.

MTN acknowledged him as a pivotal figure in the company’s three-decade history and said his contributions to the company and the broader telecommunications industry are highly esteemed.

During his tenure, Dabengwa played a crucial role in steering MTN through notable periods of expansion and transformation. His strategic foresight and knowledge of the telecommunications landscape were instrumental in the company’s success during this era, the statement added.

The group emphasised that beyond his professional accomplishments, Dabengwa was admired for his integrity, humility, and the respect he extended to colleagues.

Commenting on his death, the current president and CEO of MTN Group, Ralph Mupita,said: “Sifiso’s impact on MTN and the broader industry was significant. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we move forward.”

He was also listed among South Africa’s 200 richest individuals based on disclosed directors’ holdings in JSE-listed companies.
