By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal crash along the Keffi–Abuja Highway at Angwan Jarmi, which claimed seven lives.

In a statement issued on Thursday, by the Corps’ spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC boss extended condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as painful and devastating. He stressed that no loss of life on the nation’s highways is acceptable.

Preliminary reports indicate that the crash involved a lone vehicle allegedly driven at excessive speed, resulting in loss of control and a collision after veering into the opposite lane.

Rescue teams of the FRSC were swiftly deployed following distress alerts. However, upon arrival at the scene, personnel reportedly encountered tension among some members of the public, including commercial motorcycle operators. The situation escalated into a mob attack on the FRSC Keffi Unit Command.

While acknowledging the depth of public emotion that often follows fatal crashes, the Corps Marshal ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into all circumstances surrounding the incident, including allegations of possible patrol-related factors.

He assured that the Corps would neither rush to apportion blame nor dismiss public concerns, adding that any personnel found to have acted outside established operational standards would be held accountable in line with regulations.

Mohammed also commended the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army for their swift intervention, which helped restore calm and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, restraint and sustained community engagement, urging members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.

It noted that attacks on rescue and enforcement personnel undermine collective efforts to safeguard lives on the highways.
