The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening Nigeria’s border security through strategic collaboration with the National Assembly.
The IGP gave the assurance on Friday while receiving members of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Border Security during a working visit to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The engagement focused on deepening cooperation between the legislative and executive arms in addressing border-related security challenges.
TheFact Daily notes that Nigeria’s border security faces several serious, ongoing issues widely recognised by lawmakers, security experts, and enforcement agencies who have raised concerns about them.
It is on record that most official border entry points are not actively manned — lawmakers reported that out of nearly 2,000 official entry points, only a small fraction have personnel present, leaving vast stretches unguarded and vulnerable. This porosity makes it easier for smugglers, traffickers, and armed groups to cross in and out undetected.
The leader of the delegation and Committee Chairman, Hon. Isah Mohammed Anka, reiterated the Committee’s resolve to support efforts aimed at enhancing border security, pledging legislative backing in key areas such as the deployment of modern technology, improved welfare for border personnel, and specialised training programmes for officers of the Border Patrol Force.
Represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Bzigu Yakubu Kwazhi, the IGP commended the Committee for its proactive engagement, stressing that national security is a collective responsibility that demands coordinated strategies, strong institutional synergy, and a unified national approach.
In his remarks, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Border Patrol Force, AIG Nemi Iwoh, lauded the Committee’s leadership and noted that the prompt implementation of resolutions reached during the meeting would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s border security architecture.
He emphasized that the Force under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun, is committed to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s borders and welcomed sustained collaboration with the National Assembly and other stakeholders in pursuit of lasting national security.
With Hon. Anka on the delegation were Hon. David Agada, Hon. Davidson Akinlayo Kolawole, Hon. Paul Gowon, Hon. Saba Ahmed Adamu, and the Committee Clerk, Mrs. Jemila Umar.
