Kano Police Foil Planned Violent Protests

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Kano State Police Command says its operatives have thwarted a planned violent protest and arrested 17 suspects for attempting to disrupt peace in the city.

The police public relations officer in the state, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, who disclosed this on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters in Bompai, revealed that security personnel were deployed to strategic locations within Kano metropolis following credible intelligence about the planned unrest.

While reiterating the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, Jigawa warned individuals and groups against unlawful gatherings, processions, or acts of violence.

“Any attempt to breach public peace will be met with a swift and decisive response from security agencies. We urge residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities,” he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, security operatives dispersed demonstrators who had assembled at Kofar Nasarawa and other areas. Some protesters, who reportedly arrived in buses, gathered under a bridge before officers used tear gas to disperse them.

Although the motive behind the protest remains unclear, security has been tightened around the Kano Government House, with restricted access to certain sections of the area.
