Lassa Fever: Nigeria Confirms Five New Cases, 159 Deaths

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has said it recorded five new confirmed cases of Lassa Fever in Edo, Ondo and Bauchi States.

According to the Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 33 (11th – 17th August 2025) released on Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases decreased from 12 in Week 32.

This brings this year’s cumulative to a total of 854 confirmed cases, 159 deaths, with a Case Fatality Ratio (CFR) of 18.6%, higher than 17.2% same period in 2024.

The NCDC informed that ⁠21 states recorded at least one confirmed case across 106 Local Government Areas (LGAs), adding that 90% of the confirmed cases were from Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi State.

Furthermore, the predominant age group affected was 21- 30 years, meanwhile, no new healthcare worker was affected this week.

The Agency however assured that the National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Technical Working Group (TWG) was supporting coordination of response activities at all levels.

Lassa fever, also known as Lassa hemorrhagic fever, is a type of viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, weakness, headaches, vomiting, and muscle pains. Less commonly there may be bleeding from the mouth or gastrointestinal tract.

The risk of death once infected is about one percent and frequently occurs within two weeks of the onset of symptoms.
