The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says it has recorded a cumulative of 1069 confirmed cases of Lassa Fever, 195 deaths and a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.2%.
This was contained in the Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 49 (1st – 7th December, 2025).
According to the report, the number of confirmed cases increased from 24 in Epi week 48 to 33 in Epi week 49 of 2025. The cases were reported in Edo, Bauchi, Ondo and Taraba state.
It stated that, “the Cumulative for week 49 (2025) total: 1069 confirmed cases, 195 deaths, CFR 18.2% (higher than 16.5% same period in 2024).
“21 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 103 LGAs”.
The report further disclosed that, 89% of confirmed cases were from Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba and Edo State. The predominant age group affected was 21- 30 years.
Fortunately, no new healthcare worker was affected this week. The number of suspected and confirmed cases decreased compared to that reported at the same period in 2024.
Lassa fever is a viral illness spread by a rat found in parts of West Africa. People can get the disease by having contact with infected people, rats or their saliva, urine or droppings.
