The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, have pledged enhanced inter-agency cooperation to secure Nigeria’s maritime space and protect critical national assets
The commitment was made on Thursday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the police chief to the minister.
According to a statement by the minister’s Special Adviser, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, both leaders underscored the strategic link between maritime security and economic growth.
Oyetola described the visit as timely, noting that the success of the Federal Government’s blue economy drive depends largely on safe and secure waterways.
He said the ministry would deepen collaboration with security institutions to curb criminality along coastal and inland corridors.
“Our waterways must remain safe for commerce, transportation and investment to thrive,” the minister said, stressing that seamless coordination among relevant agencies is essential to achieving sustainable development in the sector.
Disu assured the ministry of the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to intensify intelligence-led operations, patrols and enforcement activities within the maritime domain.
He added that the police would continue to partner with institutions whose mandates intersect with national security and economic development.
Both officials agreed to institutionalise regular consultations and operational coordination to strengthen surveillance coverage, response capacity and information sharing across agencies operating within Nigeria’s marine and coastal environments.
