The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has said fasting may continue on Sunday as the new moon has not been sighted in Nigeria.
The council which is under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, made the announcement on Saturday in a statement signed by NSCIA Secretary-General Prof. Is-haq Oloyede.
TheFact Daily gathered that Saudi Arabia had announced the sighting of the crescent moon earlier on Saturday.
Saudi Arabia uses more than 10 astronomical observatories to track the lunar calendar, helping determine key Islamic dates, including the start and end of Ramadan and Eid.
However, the Sultan enjoined Muslims to look for the Shawwal crescent on the 29th of Ramadan.
According to the statement “If Muslims sight the crescent in accordance with the moon sighting and verification standards, then His Eminence would declare Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the 1st of Shawwal and the day of Idul Fitr,” he said.
Ramadan is a sacred month in Islam, observed through fasting, prayer, charity, and good deeds. It is one of the five pillars of Islam.
