The Nigerian Navy (NN) says the suspects involved in the demise of one Mr. Ifeanyi Richard Onumaegbu have been taken into custody for questioning.
This was contained in a statement issued today by the NN’s spokesman, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu.
Navy in the statement expressed deep sadness over the circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased whom the Service said was an integral part of the Navy family as a civilian staff of the Ministry of Defence attached to the Laboratory Department of the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital (NNRH) Ojo, Lagos since 2009, and who served meritoriously.
Explaining the circumstances of the death, the Navy disclosed that on 31 March 2024, Onumaegbu was found lifeless in his office at the NNRH. A preliminary investigation revealed that 4 days earlier, precisely on 26th March 2024, the deceased was involved in an altercation with a civilian lady and some Navy personnel in Navy Town barracks.
“Consequently, all suspected personnel and the civilian lady involved in the previous altercation were identified and are currently under close custody” the statement said, adding that it has facilitated the movement of the deceased’s body to a reputable government hospital in Lagos based on the request of the family for an autopsy.
The Navy further gave assurances to the family and the general public that “all necessary measures are being taken to unravel the cause of death and any person found culpable would be prosecuted according to extant laws”.
