By Stella Enenche, Abuja

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has certified Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) and Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport, Port Harcourt (JOAIA), confirming that both aerodromes meet international safety and operational standards.

The certification marks a first for both airports and increases the number of certified international airports in Nigeria to four, joining Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Director-General of NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo on Friday , described the certification as a historic milestone.

He said it demonstrates the NCAA’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s airports comply with the Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 and ICAO standards.

“Both MAKIA and JOAIA have now been adjudged compliant with no significant safety concerns outstanding,” Capt. Najomo said. He added that certification strengthens the airports’ risk profiles, often resulting in lower insurance premiums and greater confidence for airlines, investors, and passengers.

FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, said the certificates come with a clear responsibility to maintain compliance.

“We have activated teams to address remaining items in the corrective action plan with urgency. Our goal is absolute compliance,” she said.

Engr. Godwin Balang, NCAA Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, explained that inspections and validations were conducted until most gaps were satisfactorily addressed, with remaining items reflected in applicable restrictions.

The certification is a key step in boosting safety, operational efficiency, and Nigeria’s standing in global aviation.
