The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a N5 million fine on Qatar Airways for infractions related to passenger rights and consumer protection regulations.

NCAA’s Director, Public Affairs and consumer Protection, Micheal Achimugu disclosed this on Wednesday via his official X handle.

TheFact Daily reports that the sanction stems from an incident involving a Nigerian passenger who was allegedly mistreated by Qatar Airways.

He was accused of sexual harassment by a cabin crew member during boarding in Lagos, but instead of being reported and handled locally, he was flown to Doha, arrested, and detained for 18 hours.

The passenger was also forced to sign documents written in Arabic, without understanding the content, and was eventually compelled to purchase a new ticket at significant financial and reputational cost.

NCAA had previously warned Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, and Saudi Air over similar consumer protection violations.

However, the Authority, said additional Letters of Investigation (LOIs) have been issued to the airline over other pending cases, which may attract further sanctions if the airline’s responses are deemed unsatisfactory.

The NCAA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and interests of all stakeholders within the aviation sector.

NCAA also stressed that airlines operating in Nigeria must comply fully with established consumer protection standard.
