NCoS Warns Against Stigmatizing Ex-offenders

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Katsina State Command, Abdulrasheed Sule, has cautioned the public against stigmatizing ex-offenders, warning that such attitudes increase the likelihood of reoffending and undermine rehabilitation efforts.

According to a statement on Monday by the state Command’s PRO, DSC Najib Idris Kunduru, ‎Sule made the call during a community engagement forum in Katsina.

He stressed that successful reintegration is a key pillar of the correctional process and depends largely on societal acceptance. He noted that rejection and lack of support often leave former inmates vulnerable, pushing them back into criminal activities.

The NCoS controller eho disclosed that the Service has enhanced its rehabilitation programmes, including skills acquisition, educational training and psychological support, to better prepare inmates for life after incarceration, however, stressed that the success of these initiatives requires active public support.

Sule also urged employers to remove barriers to employing reformed ex-offenders who have served their sentences.

The forum, which brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups and youth representatives, highlighted the importance of community-based support systems for ex-offenders. Participants emphasized the need for employment opportunities, counselling, mentorship and other forms of assistance to aid reintegration.

The engagement ended with community leaders pledging to promote acceptance of ex-offenders and to collaborate with the Nigerian Correctional Service to reduce recidivism in Katsina State.
