The newly nominated Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Engr. Abdullahi Ramat, has assumed office with the pledge to ensure the delivery of stable power supply to Nigerians.
Engr. Ramat, was nominated as NERC Chairman by President Bola Tinubu on Thursday to work in acting capacity pending his confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
Speaking on Friday at a brief welcome ceremony organised in his honour at the Commission’s Headquarters, Abuja, the Acting Chairman said with strategic collaboration with the relevant stakeholders inthe industry, the power challenges in the country would be surmounted.
Acknowledging that there is a lot of work to do, the Chairman said, he and the Commissioners would go through the documents at NERC, learn and be ready for the job.
To Nigerians, he said “we know the problem they are facing. This time, it is not going to be business as usual. The Distribution Companies, the Generation Companies must do the right thing, this is my message to them.”
While briefing him earlier, the Vice Chairman, NERC, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, said, “there is need for stability in the industry at this material time and the need to navigate the ongoing transfer of regulatory oversight to states and ensure that we achieve the much-expected growth in the industry.
“On behalf of my colleagues, once again you are welcome. We look forward to all the initiatives you will be bringing on board for improvement in the power sector.
“The NERC and the Nigerian Power Sector in general is more or less governed by the act of the National Assembly, which is the Electricity Act 2023, which provides the mandate of the Commission, the power of the Commission and the limitations of the Commission.
“And also, we have what we called the business rules of the Commission, which governs the operations of the Commission, especially with respect to the decisions on market issues. On this note, on behalf of my colleagues, I hand over this to you,” he said.
President Tinubu had urged the new appointees to use their knowledge and experience to discharge their functions and work assiduously to advance the administration’s power sector vision.
