The Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT Limited, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen has highlighted the company’s growth trajectory and expanding global partnerships as it marks its 20th anniversary at the Nigerian Satellite Week (NSATWK) 2026.

Egerton-Idehen who spoke on Monday in Abuja at the opening of the event themed:“Harnessing Space for an Extraordinary Nigeria”, said the anniversary offers an opportunity not just for reflection, but for a forward-looking assessment of Nigeria’s space ambitions.

She noted that NIGCOMSAT has evolved from a single satellite operator into a multi-service provider delivering connectivity, broadcasting and broadband services across Nigeria and parts of Africa.

Highlighting recent gains, the NIGCOMSAT boss disclosed that the company’s revenue has doubled over the past two years, driven by strategic reforms and expanding service demand.

She also pointed to key international partnerships, including a Low Earth Orbit connectivity agreement with Eutelsat, describing it as “one of the most significant commercial agreements in NIGCOMSAT’s history.”

According to her, the organisation has also strengthened regional cooperation through collaboration with the Kenya Space Agency, while gaining global influence as Vice Chair of the Global Satellite Operators Association.

“These achievements are the compounding return on Nigeria’s original sovereign decision,” she said, adding that they reflect growing institutional credibility in the global satellite industry.

Egerton-Idehen stressed that beyond commercial success, the company remains focused on national development through initiatives such as Project 774, aimed at extending connectivity to all local government areas.

“It is the clearest institutional expression of our conviction that the purpose of Nigeria’s space programme is not prestige; it is people,” she said.

She further disclosed that NIGCOMSAT has intensified capacity building efforts, with VSAT training programmes already conducted in multiple states to equip young Nigerians with technical skills in satellite technology.

“The startups presenting today are not peripheral to Nigeria’s space story; they are its next chapter,” she added.

Egerton-Idehen also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving two additional satellites, describing the move as “a defining moment for Nigeria’s space programme.”

In a goodwill message, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Aminu Maida underscored the growing importance of satellite technology in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

“Satellite technology is now central to the expansion of our digital infrastructure,” he said, adding that its impact spans communication, security, education and emergency services.

He noted that the Commission’s focus is to ensure such advancements translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.

“At the NCC, our priority remains ensuring that these advancements deliver real opportunities, improving access and enhancing service quality,” he said.

The NCC chief commended NIGCOMSAT for convening the event, noting that it reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s space and satellite ecosystem.
