NIGCOMSAT Blames Inefficiency On Structural Challenges, Appeals For Support

The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) has appealed to the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to address the structural challenges affecting the agency’s growth and efficiency.

Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, Mrs. Egerton-Idehen made the call on Wednesday during a courtsey visit by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Rafiu Adeladan in Abuja.

Mrs. Egerton-Idehen who expressed delight over the visit reiterated the agency’s strategic importance, saying “If other nations can reach the space, there is no reason Nigeria cannot, she emphasised.

She added that ,”NIGCOMSAT stands ready to lead that charge,”.

The Managing Director urged the Ministry to prioritize Project 774.

The permanent secretary, commended the agency for its pivotal role in fostering national connectivity, narrowing digital divides, and securing Nigeria’s foothold in the global knowledge-driven economy.

“The Ministry regards NIGCOMSAT not merely as an implementing agency, but as a strategic partner in realizing Nigeria’s aspirations in space technology, broadband access, and digital sovereignty,” he said.

He acknowledged key concerns previously raised by the Managing Director, including the decade-long recruitment freeze which has inevitably impacted innovation and operational capacity.

Other pressing matters highlighted include a shortage of critical technical personnel, the need for support in the rollout and execution of Project 774, and issues surrounding inadequate remuneration some critical factors, he described as essential for attracting and retaining top-tier talent.

Mr. Adeladan reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to fostering collaboration with NIGCOMSAT to tackle these challenges.

He said while some of the concerns may necessitate broad policy reviews and inter-agency coordination, he assured NIGCOMSAT Ltd, of the Ministry’s commitment to exploring practical and actionable solutions within Nigeria’s regulatory and fiscal landscape.

According to a statement by NIGCOMSAT’s Head, Corporate Affairs Department, Aisha Bantam, the courtesy call forms part of the Permanent Secretary’s ongoing engagements since assuming office.
