Nigeria Beats Gabon 4-1 In Africa’s World Cup Playoff

The Super Eagles of Nigeria gained a 4-1 victory over Gabon in the World Cup qualifiers Playoff on Thursday, in Stade Mohammed V Stadium, Rabat, Morocco.

The match kicked off at 5pm Nigeria time, with both teams putting on their best to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which shall be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and North America.

Nigeria’s first goal came in the 78 minutes, with Akor Adams, giving Nigeria the lead.

Although, the celebration didn’t last long before Gabon equalised the goal in the 89 minutes.

Tension rises some minutes into extra time when Victor Osimhen missed a golden opportunity to give Nigeria a win.

The miss cost Nigeria greatly as the match eventually went into extra time.

Seven minutes into the extra time, Wilfred Ndidi rolled the ball forward from midfield and slid a perfect pass into the path of Chidera Ejuke, who slotted the ball in for his first goal for Nigeria in the 97 minutes.

Benjamin Frederick got the ball and set up Victor Osimhen, who netted his 30th goal for the Super Eagles in the 102 minutes.

Victor Osimhen scored his second goal in the 110 minutes. He secured a brace in the match.

The match ended 4-1 in favour of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, with Victor Osimhen’s brace pushing the team to the playoff finale which shall be hosted in Morocco.

Nigeria will face the winner between Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final playoff on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Rabat, Morocco, in Prince Abdellah Stadium.

The final match will determine the African representative in the FIFA intercontinental playoff tournament in March 2026, with the winner securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
