Nigeria Crash Out Of 2025 AFCON Tournament

The Super Eagles of Nigeria’s impressive run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament came to an end on Wednesday night as they suffered a 4-2 defeat on penalties at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Morocco.

The Super Eagles were beaten by the Hosts, Morocco, on Penalties after a tensed 0-0 draw through 120 minutes in the Semifinal.

Nigeria went into the match as the tournament’s only perfect side with five straight wins and the highest goal tally; dominated large portions of the game but couldn’t break through Morocco’s defense.

Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams tested goalkeeper Yassine Bounou repeatedly, but the Atlas Lions held firm, bounded by passionate home support.

The match remained goalless after regular time and extra periods, forcing a penalty shootout.

Morocco converted four of their kicks confidently, while Nigeria saw two efforts saved, sealing their elimination.

Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero once again for the hosts, earning praise for his composure under pressure in the goal post.

This loss echoes Nigeria’s recent penalty disappointment in World Cup qualifiers against DR Congo just months ago.

Despite the heartbreak, the Super Eagles’ campaign showcased their redemption spirit after missing the 2026 World Cup.

Morocco advances to face Senegal in the final, chasing their first AFCON title since 1976 on home soil.

For Nigeria, the focus now shifts to future tournaments asthey will face Egypt in the third-place playoff on Saturday in Casablanca.
