“Nigeria also conveys its deep sympathy to those injured and to the affected communities during this period of immense grief, and prays for the quick recovery of the wounded.

“We note with concern the circumstances surrounding the incident, which reportedly occurred following heavy rainfall and affected artisanal miners and residents in the area. The magnitude of the tragedy underscores the severe humanitarian challenges confronting vulnerable communities in resource-rich regions, as well as the risks associated with unsafe and informal mining practices”, he said.

Ebienfa added that Nigeria stands in solidarity with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and commended the efforts of local authorities and emergency response workers in recovering victims, providing medical assistance to the injured, and ensuring the safety of affected populations.

He further stated that the thoughts and prayers of the Government and people of Nigeria are with the Government and people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at this difficult time.

On 28 January 2026, a severe collapse occurred at the Rubaya mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). At first, 200 people were estimated to have been killed in the collapse, but by 2 February, more than 400 deaths were confirmed in the incident. The mine collapse was caused by a landslide that was the result of years of poor mining practices and a lack of maintenance. Several individual mines collapsed in the landslide.
