The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has affirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Navy towards the decarbonisation of the maritime environment by incorporating solar power in her energy options.
The CNS stated this while making remarks at the ongoing maiden Africa Strategic Summit on Shipping Decarbonisation holding at the TRANSCORP Hilton Hotel Abuja.
The summit, which began on Monday 17th March and continues today, is organised by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola CON, and is focused on strategic imperatives to achieve zero shipping decarbonisation in Africa.
The summit brings together the leading stakeholders in the maritime industry including the Chairman, Senate Committee on Transportation, Wale Eshonlokun, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Marine Transport, Abdulsamad Dasuki, the Minister of Innovative Science and Technology, Ministers of Environment, Foreign Affairs, Industry, Trade and Investment, and the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr Dayo Mobereola.
The CNS admitted that although the current energy landscape in Nigeria is predominantly based on fossil fuels, the Nigerian Navy, by embracing solar power, is well positioned to contribute to the overall goal of decarbonisation in the maritime environment.
The Summit is expected to shape how Africa reduces her carbon footprints in line with global efforts.
